This was Billie Holiday’s penultimate recording and the last of her albums to appear during her lifetime. It is one of her most flawed, yet, at the same time, an essential recording. Timeless and unbearably emotional, this is an album that somehow documents her life in a manner never achieved by the many penned portraits or that glossy Hollywood on-screen portrayal. An essential – often astounding – recording, it was finally inducted into the Grammy Hall Of Fame in 2000.
