As one of the great tenors to emerge from Los Angeles' Central Avenue scene, Dexter Gordon led a colourful and eventful, sometimes tragic life that included three triumphant comebacks in a four-plus-decade career. Slide Hampton was a fine trombonist and arranger from the start of his career in the mid-'50s, keeping the tradition of bop alive in both his playing and his writing.
