Taken from three separate sessions from 1945-’47, ‘Dexter Rides Again’ showcases prime bebop sides Gordon cut for Savoy.
The album kicks off with “Dexter’s Riff”, a cooking bebop number with a memorable tagline performed in unison by Leo Parker and Dexter Gordon. “Settin’ the Pace Parts 1 & 2” is the longest piece on the album, giving the two saxophonists more room to stretch out. “So Easy” is a slower bluesier track, which ends the 1947 session.
Abetted by a collective cast including the fine, yet rarely heard trumpeter Leonard Hawkins, baritone saxophonist Leo Parker, pianists Tadd Dameron and Bud Powell and drummers Max Roach and Art Blakey.
